Implant Types

The most common type of implants used today are silicone or saline implants with the most popular choice being a silicone implant. These implants come in varying sizes and projections including moderate and high profile implants depending on the patient’s desired results. Implants also come in tear drop shapes and with different outer shells either smooth or textured.

Saline implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saline solution encased in an elastomer silicone shell. Silicone gel implants are composed of a silicone gel that is encased in an elastomer silicone shell.

There are other not as commonly used composite implants that are filled with soy oil, polypropylene string, or other materials.

Our doctors will evaluate your breasts, skin laxity, physique and chest measurements to determine the style and size of breast implant, as well as the placement that will help you achieve your desired result.

Breast Augmentation Techniques

Incision Type

The most common incisions used in breast augmentation today are the periareolar incision (around the nipple) or the inframammary incision which in under the breast fold. There is also a transaxillary incision which is located in the armpit however this approach has lost its popularity through the years.

The incision choice to be used is based not only on the patient-physician preference but also on the type of implant the patient desires, the size of the implant to be used and the patients breast anatomy.

Implant Placement

Breast augmentation is achieved by placing an implant either underneath the chest muscle which is called a submuscular placement or under the breast tissue which is commonly referred to as subglandular or submammary.

FAQ

Will Breast Implants Lift My Breasts?

One of the most commonly asked questions in patients who have some degree of breast ptosis either from weight loss, breastfeeding, pregnancies, or their naturally born anatomy is, “Will breast implants lift my breast”?

In many patients augmentation alone will provide their desired results while some patients may require a combination of breast lift and augmentation.

With breast implants patients can expect a larger and fuller version of their current breasts. If this is a satisfactory goal for the patient then implants without a lift will provide them with their aesthetic goals. .

If the nipple/areola complex is slightly low on the patients chest wall then this is an indication of the patient requiring a dual procedure.

One of our doctors will personally review with each patient their expected results and then provide a surgical plan to ensure the patients goals are met.

How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery

In our practice we have two patient consultants that walk each patient through the phases of their scheduled surgery. A preoperative appointment is set where we review the preoperative instructions, consents, commonly asked questions and ensure that the patient has been provided all of the information they need to be prepared and excited for their upcoming breast augmentation surgery.

A medication sheet is filled out by the patient which is reviewed by our anesthesiologist to ensure that any medications a patient may be on does not have any adverse side effects that could cause complications during the procedure. Patients will be asked to refrain from taking any aspirin or aspirin containing compounds, as well as most vitamins and herbs that cause thinning of the blood.

If the patient is traveling from out of town then we are always happy to set up arrangements for aftercare. We have multiple aftercare facilities located nearby if they are traveling alone or hotel accommodations of varying price ranges for patients who are traveling with a caregiver. We also provide each patient with a postoperative goody bag that contains many items you will need post surgery to help with your healing and comfort.

Breast Augmentation: Day of Surgery: What to Expect

The day of surgery the patient will be brought in for a preoperative discussion with one of our doctors to discuss any last minute questions or concerns they may have. They will then be taken into our fully accredited private operating facility to meet their anesthesiologist, recovery room nurses, and operating room technician. Once the patient meets our team they become very comfortable as they provide the utmost care and take every consideration possible to ensure that the patients procedure day is fondly remembered.

Once the procedure is finished the patient will be awakened from sleep and placed into a surgical bra and taken into the recovery room where they will rest and relax until ready to go home. The nurse will review their post operative instructions with their caregiver and they will be discharged to return home to rest.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast augmentation patients are always seen the day after their surgery. They are then seen on day three or four for follow up depending on the patient and whether or not they have drains in. During this time the patient is asked to rest and not to do any heavy lifting. In patients with young children it is advised to have a caregiver for the first week. Most patients will resume exercise in three to six weeks. We will design a post operative plan specific to each patients needs and help them through the recovery phase.

This is the time a patient should rest, relax and enjoy the things that they love to do, like reading, watching movies, catching up with loved ones..and mothers with children can enjoy watching their husbands take care of the kids.

Our boutique plastic surgery center allows one on one communication with the staff at all times and our doctors provide their personal cell phone to all surgical patients to ensure that they have a smooth transition through their recovery.
