Regrow natural, healthy hair

The ARTAS System is a robotic procedure that carefully removes healthy hair follicles from donor areas and implants them into thinning or balding areas. This process allows the patient to regrow natural, healthy hair in trouble spots that have receded over time.

Because of its precision and effectiveness, our team at Esthetica of Newport Beach is proud to give our patients a genuine solution to hair loss.

With ARTAS, patients get their real, natural hair back. If you are interested in learning more about ARTAS, please schedule a consultation at our Newport Beach location.

About Hair Loss

The most common type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia. For some, symptoms of androgenetic alopecia may be present as early as puberty. For men, this condition thins the top of the head, recedes the hairline, and leaves only the sides with a normal amount of densely packed hair. In women, androgenetic alopecia typically only causes balding or thinning around the crown of the head. This process is caused by the effect of dihydrotestosterone on the hair follicles.[1] This natural chemical causes the follicles on the scalp to gradually miniaturize.

Follicular Hair Extraction

Follicular hair extraction (FUE) is when healthy hair follicles are extracted from different donor areas around the head. Typically, this occurs around the sides and back of the head. Then, those follicles are planted into the balding areas on top of the head. Contrary to the alternative hair transplantation approach – follicular unit transplantation (FUT) – FUE offers quicker patient recovery as well as significantly lowers post-operative discomfort. [2] While FUT is often performed manually, ARTAS is controlled and perfected with robotic assistance. With ARTAS, the hair follicles are carefully and uniformly extracted from the donor areas.

Then, they are dispersed evenly and prepared for transplantation inside the device. The ARTAS system then lubricates and injects the follicles at a fixed depth in the balding areas. This is important because it’s what will help the relocated hair remain healthy so that the procedure is a success.

Benefits of ARTAS

With the ARTAS System, there comes a host of benefits.

No Scarring

While in the past, treatments like FUT required a long incision in the back of the patient’s head to harvest the hair follicles. After the operation, a long scar would be evident. For some, the hair growth would effectively hide the scar. But for others, the scar remained noticeable even after hair grew back. With ARTAS, there are no incisions made to harvest the hair follicles. Instead, the ARTAS System extracts the follicles in groups of four to six and implants them into the balding areas. With no incisions necessary, patients who choose ARTAS do not have to worry if they will walk away with any noticeable scarring.

Quicker Sessions

Because the treatment is performed robotically instead of by a human practitioner, the treatment time for some undergoing ARTAS is cut down 50% compared to other hair transplantation methods. This means less time in the operating room and more time to get home, focusing solely on optimal recovery.

Natural Results

Because the ARTAS System carefully spaces the hair follicles out and injects that at a uniform depth, you can expect to see real, natural results. The hair will grow back dense and thick. Don’t worry about combing it or avoiding water or hats. With ARTAS, you receive a head of hair that responds naturally to your daily life!

Candidates

If you are interested in experiencing the ARTAS solution, you might be an approved candidate. Candidates for ARTAS are men and women who have:

Experienced hair loss on the top of your head.
Donor areas that are abundant in healthy follicles.
Not undergone past hair transplant operations.

It is important to note that qualified candidates should have a healthy amount of hair on the back and sides of their heads. Also, patients should have an honest expectation for how long the regrowth process takes and how long the body takes to accept the new changes after the surgery. On average, it takes about six months to see results.

Personal Consultation

Esthetica of Newport Beach opened with one goal in mind: to give our Orange County patients the best, tailor-made results possible. We are proud to offer the most advanced and effective products and services in the cosmetic industry. Dr. Wael Kouli is one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeons in Southern California. He has earned this reputation by routinely giving his patients the best care possible. He is a board-certified surgeon and a diplomat for the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.

During your consultation with one of our providers, we will first go over your medical history to ensure each patient is a healthy candidate for the Artas procedure. Once we get through the medical exam our provider will discuss your goals and what you hope to achieve with this procedure. It is important to make sure the patient and provider are on the same page in terms of goals and what exactly the procedure entails. Next, we will examine your hair. The important parts here are to see how healthy your donor areas are as well as inspect the thinning top of your head.

The follicular health of your present hair will, in part, determine if you are qualified to undergo ARTAS hair treatment. If you do have the right and ample hair follicles necessary, then we can schedule a time and date for your first session. In the interim, we will give you a personalized list of preparatory steps that should be adhered to.

Procedure

During your ARTAS procedure, we will first administer a topical anesthetic cream onto the top, sides, and back of your head. Then, we will program the robot to configure to your hair type and desired effect. It will work to extract the healthy follicles from your donor areas in groups of 4-6 follicles. Then, it will take those groupings and inject them into the thinning areas at equal depths.

Because the process is automated, the room for error has decreased significantly. Since ARTAS plants the follicles at equal depths in the top of your head, your hair will grow out equally. The duration of this procedure depends on how large the target area is. On average, an ARTAS procedure takes 4-8 hours to complete and if the target area is larger then more sessions may be required.

Results

In the next few weeks, you will begin to notice the implanted hairs falling out. This is completely normal. It means the new follicles have taken root and are pushing the old dead hair out of your skin. In the next six months, your hair will grow back stronger and fuller. It is important to be patient during this time in the process and trust that the harvested follicles will take root and grow.

FAQ

Preparation

Before your procedure, it is important to follow these steps:

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications as this can cause excessive bleeding during your ARTAS treatment
  • Avoid nicotine and alcohol as these substances can hamper the body’s natural ability to heal and recover
  • Trim hair in donor areas as this will promote maximum yield when harvesting hair follicles and will ensure an even regrowth of hair in the following months

Recovery

Recovering from ARTAS will include redness and tiny holes around your head, but these should subside within the next week. Swelling should also subside in the next two to three days. You may return to normal activities the following day, but be sure to avoid any strenuous activities for the next couple of weeks. Just as important, focus on not aggravating the target area and avoid direct prolonged UV exposure.
